The Goum raid is a step towards living as a more centred, powerful and free individual! A potential that has been dangerously hindered by our civilisation’s current evolution. Our “developed” societies are drifting more and more towards a technical civilisation, that doesn’t tell us anything about the meaning of our human existence, and where the individual becomes an object, to be manipulated by those who play God to serve their best interests. “Developed” or not, these societies are evolving into super active civilisations where finding the time to live in earnest is hard! This type of civilisation is alienating, and many young people have become afraid of life, and only exist to half or even a fourth of their true potential! Goums try to get rid of this unease. To at least try to live to the fullest, as a free individual. To believe that everyone has the power to grow and bear fruit.
Who is it for?
Goum treks are suited for those who have a head and legs! For those who are between 20 and 35 years old and aspire to a whole week of adventure, walking in deserted areas. Students who need to recover their physical and mental health after some years of exhausting exams. Or those who have launched into never-ending studies and who want to take care of themselves. Young adults who, before entering in an active professional life, want to know how to manage their personal spirituality. Adults engaged in their professional lives and who feel the need to evacuate their everyday obsessions through a big breath of fresh air.
How?
By embarking on a “raid”!
The first thing you must do to begin the Goum adventure is to leave! Leave your home, your family, parents, friends and comfort… This is necessary to find yourself in the immensity of the desert. In small groups of 15 to 20 people, we walk under the sun until dark, where we meet to install our camp. A hike of close to 100 miles over 7 days, with only a map and compass, for 5 to 7 hours a day. A hike that requires a certain effort, as a challenge. A priest accompanies every raid, to testify of the love of Christ for each of us and to allow us to meet Him every day through the Holy Communion. Spirituality is first and foremost obtained with our feet! The long hike transforms us whole by refocusing us on the essential things. By walking, we learn to know ourselves, to build, to exist and to reach out to others… and to the Lord!
Michel Menu
The Goum community was funded in 1969 by Michel Menu, a former French resistant and leader of the scouting movement in France in the 50’s and 60’s. Michel was a passionate educator, who wrote many books on the subject. He passed away at age 99 in 2015.
« Walking ahead, always ahead! Keep standing when they all sit down, And smile when teeth begin to grind. Give them water when theirs runs out And when they lose heart, give your own. Carry the tiredness of the weak, Give light to the ones in darkness, Hope for ten, will for eleven. And at nightfall, in the silence, speak to the Lord for them And let Him do … everything else. »
